What should you ask when looking for a wedding photographer?
Hiring a wedding photographer requires a lot of research. Make sure you know what to look for and the right questions to ask. We’ve also taken this opportunity to share how we would answer the questions here. If you have a question and cannot find the answer, please call us or visit our contact page and we will get back to you promptly.

What is your wedding photography style?

I don't classify myself as a one specific type of a wedding photographer. My wedding photography style is a combination of traditional - will direct and pose for a formal and unique look; contemporary - bring in the fun by infusing informal and relaxed atmosphere; and photo journalistic - simply photographing the events as they naturally unfold on your big day.

By combining all three styles, plus capturing all the small but important awesome details, I am confident that I will tell your love story explicitly and create a timeless work of art.

Do you charge for travel time?

I do not charge for travel time. For example if your package include an hour of engagement photo shoot, I will spend at least an hour of photography and not charge you time to get to the location. On the day of the wedding however, if your package is for eight (8) hours of photography, time starts ticking from the time you requested me to start shooting. For an 8-hour example, if you want me to start at 2:00 pm, photography will end at 10:00 pm and travelling in-between photo shoot locations is inclusive.

What kind of photography equipment do you use?

I trust Nikon to produce the photos that I envision. I use only professional grade Nikon cameras using full-frame (FX) sensors - Nikon D3s and Nikon D700 - for my wedding photography services. Coupled with these are high-end Nikon Nikkor optics such as Nikon AFS 70-200mm f/2.8, Nikon AFS 24-70mm f/2.8, Nikon AFS 14-24mm f/2.8 and Nikon AFS 105mm f/2.8 lenses and Nikon SB-910 and SB-700 Speedlights.

These choices allow me to have the flexibility to capture your special moment. Your wedding, or your special event, deserves the best wedding photography equipment!

Do your clients get to keep all the photos?

Yes. You will receive a DVD disc or discs containing the photographs from your engagement and your wedding day. This means you can do what you want with them; get them printed at Walmart or share them on Facebook or just e-mail them to family and friends.

Xela Photography does retain the copyright on all photographs. Some photographers make you order expensive prints so be careful of this. We live in a digital age – beware of hidden costs.

Will the images be edited?

We will sort through all the images we shoot in excess of 1,000+ images on a full wedding shoot. We are great photographers, but they are not all keepers. After a first pass at deleting poor images the rest are color corrected, exposure corrected, and white balance corrected. After that, the images are sorted again using a ranking system. Stand-out images are edited in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Photoshop further. We obviously don’t edit 1,000 images in Adobe Photoshop, but we will touch up and edit hundreds of images. We work hard for you, so we do ask that you give photo credits back to our website if you use the pictures on a blog or even Facebook!

Make sure your photographer is going to spend some time at the computer. Even the best photographer in the world needs to sift through shots and check white balances and sharpness. Find out how much post production your photographer plans on doing; make sure they plan on reviewing the image set and making the necessary adjustments as needed. Find out if you will get all the images in color or will some be black and white, sepia, color toned, and manipulated in other ways – these are good things to have clarified.

How much time do you take to edit and deliver the final images?

We typically send out the final USB drive of images two to four weeks after your wedding day. It’s not a promise as life happens, but it’s our rule of thumb. But if we can finish it in less than that (we often do), then we will absolutely deliver it out as soon as it is completed along with your photobook or album.

This may not be critical to you, but it’s worth asking. Some companies can take months to return your images and that may be okay to you, but please confirm this time frame with your photographer.
